Gastric Bypass
Q. I am currently six months pregnant and already have a 2 yr. Old daughter. Before the birth of my first daughter I had Gastric Bypass Surgery and do not absorb vitamins very well. I am severely anemic. With my first pregnancy I was told that I could not breastfeed because of my lack of absorption. Is it possible for me to breastfeed?

A. Tricky issues here in respect to your own good health. However, there is very little doubt in my mind that breastfeeding is not only possible but far and away the best thing for your new baby. If you can sustain a healthy fetus through a pregnancy, you can certainly absorb enough nutrients for a breastfeeding baby. Keep taking the same vitamins and supplements you take for pregnancy while you're nursing.
