Social Distancing and the Unvaccinated

If a state allows parents to obtain religious exemptions from vaccination requirements for school entry, can it temporarily exclude unvaccinated children from school during an outbreak of a vaccine-preventable illness without violating the family’s constitutional rights? If parents refuse to vaccinate their children, what can physicians legally and ethically do to protect other patients in their practice from exposure to vaccine-preventable illnesses?

Flu Shot

Flu Shot

Q. Last winter, my five year old daughter was hit hard by the flu. While her immune system was fighting the flu, strep throat took hold and she had to take a course of antibiotics. In spite of all of the alternative approaches we utilized, plus excellent nutrition, she really had a rough winter after that. Several people have mentioned that they give their kids flu shots every year. I really do not feel comfortable with this. What is your opinion of flu shots for kids now and then?

Vaccines in Preemies

Vaccines in Preemies

Q. My preemie son has his four month appointment this month and I know I am going to meet resistance from the Pediatrician about wanting to postpone his vaccinations. Is there anything printed that I can take with me that supports the decision to delay beyond the schedule used in the US? I’ve been planning to vaccinate him on a modified schedule (two shots each time instead of four), leaving out the Varivax, Prevnar and the Hepatitis B.
