Q. I have to have a colonoscopy next week. I expect they’ll use Demerol or something like that for me.
They mentioned me not nursing for the day of and day after my procedure. I’m worried about those two days even if I pump and throw it away since my son does not take a bottle. He will drink some from a cup, but certainly still wants to nurse a lot. He’s 16 months old.
Could I nurse him some during this time? I certainly do not want to start the weaning process accidentally.
Any suggestions? Is nursing the day I take the colyte a problem?

A. Like many doctors, your docs have a bit of blind spot when it comes to breastfeeding and medication. There are NO routine medications used for a colonoscopy which will cause even one minute of interruption of nursing; not Demerol not any similar meds nor anything used to clean out prior to the procedure.
